Iron Wok Jan Vol. 19 Review
Iron Wok Jan Vol. 19 Review
Will Jan's cuisine reign supreme?
by A.E. Sparrow
October 18, 2006 - When we left Iron Wok Jan way back at volume two, a heated cooking tournament was underway, and while Jan Akiyama and his rival, Kiriko Gobancho entered as teammates, they ended up on opposite ends of the playing field in the finals. No spoilers here, but it seems that by this nineteenth volume it's a new year, new tournament, and a host of new faces…some friendly, some not. Whether Jan will find himself facing Kiriko again is anyone's guess, but first he must get past the Riku clan, who claim to be the master of cuisine for not just China or Japan, but all of Asia.

Unless you're a Food Network junkie, you might think a book about cooking would be pretty boring, but Saijyo-san's frenzied artwork will pull you in and never let go. Spoons and knives are wielded like rapiers. Ingredients are revealed much in the same way a Dragonball Z character would announce a super-secret saiyan move. If you're an Iron Chef fan, just think about the way the secret ingredient gets introduced each time ("Bell PEPPER!"). It's difficult to read this book and not fly through the pages to keep up with the pace, but like a good meal, take time to savor what went in to creating this book. There are crowd scenes here that would do George Perez proud, and much of the humor comes from their reaction to the contestants and their dishes.
